• The types of matters that can be placed on the commercial list
• The advantages of bringing commercial litigation in the Federal Court

Justice Derrington was called to the Bar in 1986. In the period from 1987 to 1989 he read for the
degree of Bachelor of Civil Laws at Worcester College, Oxford. Upon returning to Australia his Honour took up a tutoring and lecturing position at the
University of Queensland and in 1990 was the associate to the Hon Justice Sir Gerard Brennan
in the High Court of Australia.
In 1991 his Honour commenced practice at the Bar in Queensland. He took Silk in 2004. His principal areas of practice have included commercial law, equity and trusts, contractual disputes in the areas of banking, joint ventures and insurance, corporations and securities law, trade practices, insolvency, administrative law, and taxation and revenue law.
He has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland since 2005.
His Honour was sworn in as a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia on 29 March 2017.
Justice Downes was appointed to the Federal Court on 2 August 2021.
Justice Downes graduated from the Queensland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons)
in 1991 and with a Bachelor of Civil Law (Hons) from the University of Oxford in 1993. Justice Downes was admitted as a Barrister in the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1992 and was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2008, with the position transitioning to Queen’s Counsel in 2013.
While at the bar, Justice Downes specialised in commercial practice and has particular experience in contractual disputes, insolvency-related disputes, banking law, mining law, company law, joint venture disputes, construction disputes and intellectual property matters.
